Sue Cox

Meet Sue Cox, owner of Simon’s Gallery Gifts and Antiques in St. Simon’s Pier Village. Sue’s beautiful and unique gift shop has been in offering some the island’s finest in coastal memorabilia and home décor for over 20 years. In the fall of 2017, Sue’s success led to the expansion of her store, doubling it in size. I have gotten to know Sue over the last year as I have had the privilege to work in her shop off and on. Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Sue for The Faces of St. Simons. True to her deep and introspective nature, Sue took her time answering my questions so as not to speak out of turn as she would never want to waste a word that someone else could potentially glean some sort of knowledge from. Please enjoy getting to know Sue a little better:

Q: What inspired you or led you to your current career?

A: “I think probably my love of houses, architecture, art and home décor.”

Q: What is your favorite restaurant on St. Simons and what do you love there?

A: “Sal’s and his famous pizza!”

Q: How long have you lived on St. Simons?

A: “For 21 years.”

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in St. Simons that you might like to see interviewed for The Faces of St. Simons?

A: “I think it would be Harry Aiken, SSI resident and somewhat of a historian in his own right.”

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now where would it be and why?

A: “Greece-the beauty and history are captivating.”

Q: What is your favorite movie and/or what is the first movie you remember seeing in a theatre?

A: “My favorite is either Harold and Maude or Out of Africa. The first I remember seeing in a theater is Herbie the Love Bug.”

Q: What advice would you give to people?

A: “Put God first. Everything aligns when you do.”

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

A: “To walk on the Greek Island of Patmos.”

Q: What is your favorite music or 3 bands that you’d like to see dead or alive?

A: “The Beatles, Steely Dan and Sting.”

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about St. Simons?

A: “Palm Coast Coffee.”—-Side note from the interviewer—Have you had their strawberry cake? Oh my gaw!!!

Q: Choosing anyone alive and a non-relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? Where on St. Simons would you take them?

A: “I’d like to have lunch with Randy Clark on the back deck of Coastal Kitchen. I’d love to learn more from him about spiritual matters.”

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about St. Simons?

A: “Physically speaking it would be the trees-the Live Oaks with Spanish Moss. Otherwise, it would have to be the people and our sense of community.”

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?

A: “I try to live in the here and now without really looking too far ahead – but, hopefully, happy.”

Q: Even for friends or family, what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

A: “I am fascinated by the Hebrew language! Each letter is also a picture and a number.”

Q: What three words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word “Home”?

A: “Comfy, cozy and safe.”
